Citrus Fruits

Juicing Lemons, Limes, Oranges, Tangerines and Grapefruits

Health Benefits of Citrus Fruits

All citrus fruits are high in vitamin C and limonene, thought to inhibit breast cancer. They are all antioxidants and have anti-cancer properties.

Red grapefruit is high in cancer-fighting lycopene.

Oranges are a good source of choline, which improves mental functioning.

The combinations are carotenoids, flavonoids, terpenes, limonoids and coumarins make citrus a total cancer fighting package.

How to juice citrus fruits

Remove the peel- it contains bitter elements but leave as much as the white pilth as you can. The pilth contains pectin and bioflavonoids which help the body to absorb vitamin C and they strengthen the bodys capillaries, assisting circulations and enhancing skin. You can also juice the seeds. The seeds contain limonoids, calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Using pulp: If you are going to use the pulp for sauces, breads or other recipes, remove as much of the pilth as you can.

Juice yield

One pound (about 3 oranges) yields about 1 ¼ cups (300 mL)
