Fruit Sorbet with Omega or Vitamix

by Pam

Q: I recently found out I have some liver problems and am going to purchase a juicer. I already own a Vitamix blender. I am not sure which juicer to buy for mainly vegetable and some fruit juice blends. I am leaning toward one of the Omega's. I like the ease of cleaning and the fact that the upright is faster to make juice than the horizontal.

My question is about the sorbet/milk homogenizer on the horizontal. If I can effectively make sorbet and nut butters on my Vitamix I will buy the upright Omega...if not then the horizontal. I also own a ice cream maker but you have to add sugar to it and I have eliminated sugar from my diet... Any suggestions?
Thank you for your help. Pam

A: Hi Pam! Glad to hear you are going to treat your liver problems with good nutrition! You won't regret it. Well, I've got good news. The Vitamix (my all-time fav machine) can make sorbets and nut butters. I do it all the time. You can check out the vitamix website (vitamix.com) for lots of recipes. It also comes with a recipe book, so take a look through that and it will give you easy instructions. Theres also lots of youtube videos out there on how to do it.

To make sorbet in the Vitamix, you just process frozen fruit (no sugar needed) with the tamper until it forms 4 separate peaks in the blender. It seems like its working hard, but its designed to do that and works great. I love making a strawberry sorbet or a banana ice cream. There are times that I do add a little bit of liquid (water or OJ).

Here's a video that shows you how:

To make nut milk, you just process the nuts and water, vanilla and spices and then strain through a nut milk bag.

To make nut butters, just add the nuts of your choice to the blender and then process on low. Adding extra oil is optional, but does help it process better.

If you want to get an upright Omega, let me suggest the vert. You can get more info on it here.
